Creating a Class in Google Classroom

  1. Click the plus in the upper right corner.
  2. Select Create class.
  3. Type in your class name and section (optional).
  4. Click Create.
To add students:
  1. Click Students.
  2. Now you have two options:
    1. Give students the code that appears at the bottom and they can join your class themselves by clicking the plus in their upper right corner and selecting Join class. OR...
    2. Click Invite.
      • In the drop-down menu that says My Contacts, select Directory.
      • Select your students.
      • Click Invite students.
The About tab:
  • You can put the course title & description here.
  • There is a link to the Drive folder for this class. (Google will make a Classroom folder in your drive. The folders for all your classes will be inside that Classroom folder.)
  • At the bottom there is an Add materials link.
    • This is a good place to put your syllabus and any other resources you might want students to come back to over and over.
    • The files you put here do NOT automatically get put in your class folder on Drive.
The Stream tab:
  • This is where you upload assignments and announcements.
  • Both announcements and assignments send an email alert to the students when you add them.
  • When you add assignments, you can attach resources or documents.
To add an assignment:
  1. In the Stream tab, click Assignment.
  2. Give it a title.
  3. You can either put the instructions in the description or in a file that you add (e.g. a Google Doc).
  4. Click on the due date to change it and add a time (if you like).
  5. To attach a file:
    1. Click on the paper clip or triangular Google Drive icon.
    2. Select the file you want.
    3. IMPORTANT: On the left, click on the drop-down menu that says Students Can View File. You have 3 options:
      1. If you select Students can view file, they will only be able to read the document, but not edit it.
      2. If you select Students can edit file, they will all have access to the SAME document (good if you want them to collaborate).
      3. If you select, Make a copy for each student, it will automatically create a new file for each student that they can edit and submit.
    4. Click Assign OR click the arrow next to Assign to save it as a draft to assign later.
